CloudFest 2025 is almost here! From March 17-20, Europa-Park in Germany will be the place to be for anyone in the hosting and cloud industry. Thousands of experts, developers, and business leaders will meet to learn, share ideas, and shape the future of web hosting.

Special Episode: CloudFest 2024

I’ve checked the agenda and picked 8 must-see talks. If you’re going to CloudFest, these are the sessions you don’t want to miss!

1. Hosting WordPress in 2025 – what’s next?

🗣 Speaker: Andrei Kugaevskii (WebPros)

📌 What it’s about: WordPress remains the world’s most popular CMS, powering millions of websites. But hosting it is getting more complex. This talk will dive into the latest trends, challenges, and innovations in WordPress hosting. Topics include performance optimization, security improvements, and automation tools that make managing WordPress easier for hosting providers and users. Andrei Kugaevskii, an expert in WordPress hosting solutions, will share insights on how the hosting industry is adapting to these changes.

As someone who works with WordPress every day, I’m excited to see what’s coming next and how to stay ahead of the competition. With growing security threats and higher user expectations, knowing the best hosting strategies is a must.

2. Hosting as a product, not just a service

🗣 Speaker: Aaron Campbell (A2 Hosting), Marcel Bootsman (Kinsta), Jonathan Wold (Guildenberg, Inc)

📌 What it’s about: Web hosting has traditionally been seen as a basic service, focusing on uptime and support. But today, the industry is shifting. Hosting companies are turning their offerings into full-featured products, bundling in advanced tools, security features, and better user experiences. This panel discussion will explore how providers can differentiate themselves, increase customer retention, and create hosting solutions that go beyond just selling space on a server.

This is a topic that really interests me. With so many hosting providers out there, standing out is getting harder. I want to hear how industry leaders are adapting and what strategies actually work in today’s competitive market.

3. Liquid cooling in data centers

🗣 Speaker: John Donovan (Lenovo)

📌 What it’s about: As demand for data processing and cloud computing grows, so does the need for efficient cooling in data centers. Traditional air cooling systems are struggling to keep up with increasing power usage, and liquid cooling is emerging as a more effective, sustainable alternative. This session will cover how liquid cooling works, its benefits for energy efficiency and cost reduction, and why it’s gaining traction in both enterprise and hyperscale data centers.

This is a fascinating shift in the industry. Liquid cooling has been used in high-performance computing for years, but now it’s entering mainstream data centers. I want to learn how companies are implementing it and if it could become the new standard for hosting providers.

4. How data centers are changing for AI

🗣 Speaker: Jerome Evans (firstcolo GmbH)

📌 What it’s about: AI is revolutionizing industries, but it also requires huge amounts of computing power. This means data centers need to adapt to new demands, from handling higher rack densities to using more efficient cooling and power management strategies. This session will explore how AI is shaping the future of infrastructure, including sustainability challenges and investment trends in AI-ready data centers.

AI is growing faster than ever, and hosting companies need to be prepared. I’m really interested in how data centers are dealing with power constraints, hardware requirements, and the rising costs of AI-driven workloads.

5. How small businesses build their online presence

🗣 Speaker: Eb Keshavarz (Verisign)

📌 What it’s about: For many small businesses, getting online is a confusing process. This talk presents research on how small business owners choose domains, websites, and hosting solutions. It will discuss why some businesses still hesitate to go online, the role of custom websites vs. social media, and how hosting providers can better serve this market.

This is a key topic for the hosting industry. Small businesses are the foundation of the online world, but many still struggle to understand hosting and domains. I want to hear how providers can make it easier for them to get started.

6. The future of Internet Privacy – a talk with Tor’s founder

🗣 Speaker: Roger Dingledine (Tor Project)

📌 What it’s about: The internet is becoming less private, with governments and companies tracking more of our online activities. Tor has been a leader in internet privacy and censorship resistance for years. In this session, Roger Dingledine will discuss the future of online anonymity, the challenges Tor is facing, and how cloud providers can support a more private and secure internet.

Privacy is a growing concern, and hosting providers play a big role in protecting it. I’m curious to see how Tor plans to evolve and what it means for the future of web hosting.

7. Ethical hosting: a better way to compete

🗣 Speaker: Christian Dawson (i2Coalition), Aleksander Kuczek (Contabo), David Snead (Secure Hosting Alliance)

📌 What it’s about: The web hosting industry has been stuck in a race to lower prices, often at the cost of security, privacy, and quality service. But is there a better way to succeed? This talk will focus on how prioritizing security, ethical practices, and transparency can actually be a profitable business model. The Secure Hosting Alliance (SHA) is working on new standards, like the SHA Trust Seal, to help customers identify ethical and secure hosting providers.

This is something I strongly believe in. Cheap hosting often means cutting corners, which can lead to poor security and bad customer experience. I want to see if ethical hosting can truly be a competitive advantage.

8. The future of cloud services

🗣 Speaker: Peter Roybal (Sectigo), Marcel Bootsman (Kinsta), Alona Borzhemska (WebPros), Christian Dawson (i2Coalition)

📌 What it’s about: The cloud industry is changing fast. This panel will discuss the biggest shifts in hosting and cloud services, including new business models, security challenges, and how providers can adapt to stay competitive. The session will also touch on customer expectations, automation, and the role of trust in the hosting industry.

With so many changes happening, it’s important to stay ahead. I want to hear what the experts think about where cloud hosting is heading and how companies can prepare for the next big trends.

See you at CloudFest!

CloudFest 2025 is packed with exciting sessions, but these eight talks stand out as some of the most important ones to watch. Whether you care about hosting, AI, privacy, or business trends, these sessions will give you valuable insights. If you’re attending CloudFest, make sure to add these to your schedule!

Tucows, a well-known internet services company, has secured a major contract to manage India’s .IN domain registry. This is a big win for the company, as it replaces GoDaddy, the previous service provider. The transition will involve moving around 4 million domain names, making it the largest migration in domain registry history.

Tucows takes over .IN Registry from GoDaddy

The National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) has chosen Tucows as the new technical service provider for .IN domains. This means that Tucows will handle the back-end operations, ensuring smooth registration and management of all .IN websites.

Tucows CEO Elliot Noss shared the news during the company’s latest earnings call. He stated that a dedicated team in India is working on the transition. Although the contract’s financial terms were not revealed, industry experts estimate it could be worth about $10 million over five years.

Tucows Domains was recently selected to be the technical services provider for the .IN country code domain, operated by the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI). Our teams are closely collaborating, and we are establishing a dedicated team in India to support this initiative.” – Tucows CEO Elliot Noss

This migration is even bigger than the previous record in 2018 when Afilias (now Identity Digital) moved 3.1 million .AU domains from Neustar. Tucows’ success in securing this contract strengthens its reputation as a major player in the domain registry business.

Tucows reports financial results for Q4 and full year 2024

Tucows also shared its earnings report for the fourth quarter of 2024. The company’s revenue grew by 7.1% compared to the same period in 2023, reaching $93.1 million. However, the company reported a significant net loss of $45.3 million. Much of this was due to a one-time impairment charge related to its Ting Internet business and restructuring costs. Without these factors, the loss would have been $15.8 million.

Despite the overall loss, Tucows’ domain name business remained strong. Revenue from domain services increased by 6%, reaching $65.7 million in Q4. For the full year, domain revenue grew by 5%. The company also saw a 36% increase in revenue from value-added services, mainly from selling expired domain names.

What this means for Tucows

Winning the .IN registry contract is a major achievement for Tucows. It not only brings in new revenue but also helps position the company for future registry contracts. Handling large-scale migrations is a key factor in securing similar deals, and successfully moving 4 million domains will demonstrate Tucows’ expertise.

With this new contract and steady growth in its domain business, Tucows is reinforcing its place in the global domain industry. The upcoming migration of .IN domains will be an important milestone in the company’s history.

Hostinger has announced the launch of Hostinger Horizons, a no-code AI-powered tool for building and publishing web apps. Unlike other AI website builders, Hostinger Horizons focuses on interactive web applications, not just static websites. The platform aims to simplify web app creation, making it accessible to users without coding knowledge.

How Hostinger Horizons works

Hostinger Horizons allows users to build web apps through a chat-based AI interface. Users can describe their ideas, and AI generates the app in real-time. It supports voice commands, image uploads, and multiple languages. Once the web app is ready, users can publish it instantly on a custom domain without external integrations.

The main advantage of Hostinger Horizons is its fully integrated approach—hosting, domains, and emails are included. Many existing AI tools require external hosting solutions, which can complicate the process. With Horizons, everything is in one place.

Web apps have turned ideas into million-dollar startups, but building one always required coding or hiring a developer. We believe it is time to change the game. [,,,] Hostinger Horizons will democratize web apps so that anyone can bring their unique and exciting ideas online.” says Giedrius Zakaitis, Hostinger Chief Product and Technology Officer.

Comparison: Hostinger Horizons vs. Wix vs. GoDaddy AI Builder

Key Differences

  1. Web Apps vs. Websites: While Wix and GoDaddy focus on static websites for businesses, Hostinger Horizons enables users to create fully functional web apps (e.g., a calorie tracker, language-learning tool, or time management app).
  2. AI Interaction: Wix and GoDaddy use AI for layout generation, while Horizons uses a chat-based AI builder that allows live modifications.
  3. Integration: Hostinger provides all-in-one hosting and publishing, while Wix and GoDaddy focus more on website creation with external app integration.

Who should use Hostinger Horizons?

Is Hostinger Horizons the right tool for you? If you’re an entrepreneur or a startup founder, the platform allows you to turn your idea into a working prototype without hiring developers or investing months into development. Need a quick and affordable MVP (minimum viable product)? Horizons enables rapid testing and iteration, so you can refine your concept before scaling.

But it’s not just for businesses. Individuals—such as educators, content creators, and hobbyists—can use Hostinger Horizons to build interactive learning tools, personal productivity applications, or even small online games. The AI-powered workflow ensures that even those with no coding background can bring their ideas to life.

Small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) can also benefit from the platform by creating internal management tools, such as booking systems, employee dashboards, or automated customer support assistants. Why spend thousands on custom development when AI can generate the same functionality in minutes?

For freelancers and agencies, time is money. Hostinger Horizons provides a faster way to deliver client solutions, removing the complexity of coding and enabling real-time adjustments based on client feedback. The AI-driven process means quicker turnarounds and more efficient workflows.

The future of AI-powered web hosting

Hostinger Horizons enters a competitive space, but it brings a unique value proposition—AI-powered web app creation with seamless deployment. Unlike Wix and GoDaddy, which focus on traditional websites, Horizons empowers users to build interactive, functional applications in minutes.

With its official rollout coming in March, it will be interesting to see how Hostinger Horizons competes with established website builders and whether it changes how people approach web app development.

DreamHost, a well-known provider of web hosting and domain services, has opened its first international data center in Amsterdam, Netherlands. This expansion aims to improve website performance, speed, and reliability for users in Europe, northern Africa, and the Middle East. By positioning servers closer to these customers, DreamHost ensures a faster and more stable hosting experience.

Why Amsterdam?

Until now, DreamHost operated data centers only in the United States, with facilities in Ashburn, Virginia, and Hillsboro, Oregon. The decision to expand into Amsterdam was strategic—it allows DreamHost to serve a broader audience while improving performance for customers outside the U.S. With servers now physically closer to users in Europe and surrounding regions, website load times are significantly reduced.

The new Amsterdam data center is equipped with high-performance hardware, advanced cooling systems, and enterprise-grade security measures. These improvements ensure websites experience fewer outages and maintain high uptime. The facility is also integrated with DreamHost’s Content Delivery Network (CDN), further accelerating content delivery to users.

Impact on hosting services

Reliable hosting is essential for businesses, bloggers, and content creators looking to establish a strong online presence. A well-performing website, paired with a clear domain name, helps attract and retain visitors. The new DreamHost facility enhances hosting services by providing better data security, faster response times, and improved stability.

New customers located near Europe will automatically be assigned to the Amsterdam data center, benefiting from reduced latency and higher performance. Existing users can also request a migration to the new facility for an improved hosting experience.

Easy migration and customer support

DreamHost is committed to making the transition smooth for its customers. Existing users who want to move their websites to the new Amsterdam data center can contact DreamHost’s support team for assistance. Additionally, the company is developing self-service migration tools, giving customers even greater control over their hosting environment.

The launch of DreamHost’s first international data center marks an important milestone in its global expansion. By improving speed, reliability, and compliance options for users outside the U.S., DreamHost strengthens its commitment to delivering high-quality hosting solutions worldwide. This move benefits businesses, developers, and content creators who rely on stable and efficient web hosting. With the Amsterdam data center now fully operational, DreamHost continues to support its customers in building and maintaining a strong online presence.

GoDaddy has made a major contribution to the WordPress ecosystem by donating $500,000 to The WP Community Collective. This donation is aimed at supporting WordPress contributors and helping sustain the open-source community that powers a significant portion of the internet.

Strengthening open source with financial support

The WP Community Collective is an initiative that funds and empowers individuals who contribute to WordPress. GoDaddy’s donation will provide financial, operational, and promotional support to community members, ensuring that designers, developers, and other contributors have the resources they need.

According to Paul Bindel, President of Partners at GoDaddy, this investment reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to the WordPress community. “GoDaddy and its employees care deeply about WordPress and support it in many ways, including time and funding” Bindel stated. The company hopes that this donation will help sustain contributions throughout 2025 and beyond.

Additional contributions to open source

Beyond the $500,000 donation, GoDaddy has also supported several other open-source initiatives:

  • PHP Coding Standards – A $12,000 donation in 2024 to improve PHP code quality tools.
  • PHP Foundation – A $24,000 donation in December 2024 to support PHP development.
  • World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) – A $40,000 donation in December 2024 to promote open web standards.
  • WP Accessibility Meetup – Sponsorship of live captions for the group’s monthly meetings.
  • Five for the Future – Sponsoring 46 contributors across 17 teams, making GoDaddy the second-largest contributor in terms of people and third in pledged hours.

These contributions highlight GoDaddy’s recognition of the importance of open-source software in keeping the internet accessible and functional for everyone.

Investing in WordPress Hosting

In addition to these community-focused efforts, GoDaddy has also redesigned its Managed WordPress Hosting platform with developers in mind. The new platform boasts faster performance, enhanced security, and better site management tools. With improvements such as seamless scaling, containerized services for better isolation, and real-time monitoring, the update aims to provide a smoother experience for WordPress users.

The updated platform serves over 80 billion requests per month and manages more than three petabytes of data, offering up to twice the performance of other WordPress hosting providers. It provides vertical scaling capabilities up to 12 cores, strong isolation with nano-segmentation, and multi-layer security using hardened containers. Additionally, real-time observability features allow users to monitor site health and performance through advanced dashboards, giving them better control over their WordPress environment.

GoDaddy’s financial and technical contributions show a long-term investment in the WordPress ecosystem. By funding contributors and enhancing its own WordPress services, the company is reinforcing its role in the open-source community.

Team Internet Group PLC has released its financial results for 2024, revealing a mixed performance with a decline in revenue and profit but record-high cash flow. Despite market challenges, the company remains strategically positioned for long-term growth, with notable gains in certain business segments.

Revenue and profit overview

Team Internet reported a 4% decline in total revenue, reaching $803 million compared to $837 million in 2023. The company’s net revenue (gross profit) also fell slightly, from $191 million to $188 million, reflecting a 2% drop. Adjusted EBITDA, a key profitability metric, decreased 4% to $92 million, down from $96 million the previous year.

Cash flow and capital allocation

Despite the revenue decline, Team Internet achieved a record-high operating cash flow of $95 million, an increase from $93 million in 2023, with an impressive 103% cash conversion rate. The company allocated capital strategically, spending:

  • $21 million on share buybacks
  • $10 million on dividends
  • $32 million on acquisitions

1. Domains, Identity & Software (DIS)

  • Revenue increased by 7% to $203 million
  • Net revenue grew 9% to $74 million
  • EBITDA surged by 46% to $19 million
  • The company streamlined operations by consolidating its subscription-based platforms and SaaS offerings.

2. Comparison business (comparison sites)

  • Revenue skyrocketed by 43% to $63 million
  • Net revenue grew by 44% to $23 million
  • EBITDA nearly doubled (89% growth) to $17 million
  • Growth was fueled by expansion into Italy, Spain, and a relaunch in France, with further global expansion planned.

3. Search business

  • Revenue fell 11% to $537 million
  • Net revenue dropped 15% to $91 million
  • EBITDA declined by 24% to $56 million
  • The decline was attributed to rising traffic acquisition costs and lower revenue per visitor from Google. The company is now prioritizing customer experience over short-term volume growth.

Team Internet faced setbacks with its Shinez acquisition, which it purchased for $41.8 million in 2023. The business underperformed, leading to a non-cash impairment charge and ongoing legal action against the founders. The company plans to transition Shinez from text-based content to short-form video, aligning with evolving consumer trends.

CEO Michael Riedl emphasized sustainable earnings growth, capital discipline, and balanced revenue streams. The company’s diversified business model, combined with its focus on AI-driven solutions in the Comparison segment, positions it well for the future.

Key takeaways

  • Revenue and EBITDA declined, but operating cash flow reached a record high
  • Comparison segment led growth (+43% revenue, +89% EBITDA)
  • DIS segment demonstrated strong efficiency gains (+46% EBITDA growth)
  • Search business underperformed due to market headwinds (-11% revenue, -24% EBITDA)
  • Strategic investments in AI and global expansion signal future growth potential

While 2024 was a challenging year, Team Internet’s focus on efficiency, capital allocation, and long-term market positioning suggests a resilient financial outlook moving forward.

WooCommerce, one of the most well-known eCommerce platforms for WordPress, has recently undergone a significant rebranding. The company has simplified its name to Woo, alongside a redesigned logo, a refined color scheme, and a shift in branding strategy. While these changes primarily focus on Woo’s positioning in the market, they also carry implications for hosting providers and businesses relying on WooCommerce for their online stores.

Why Woo changed its brand

The decision to rebrand wasn’t just cosmetic. Woo recognized the need to differentiate itself in a competitive eCommerce landscape where SaaS platforms like Shopify and BigCommerce have strong brand recognition. According to Woo, this new identity aligns with its commitment to flexibility, ownership, and customization—key values that open-source platforms offer over closed SaaS solutions.

WooCoomerce rebranding

Impact on hosting providers and eCommerce businesses

For hosting providers offering WooCommerce-optimized solutions, this shift presents both challenges and opportunities. Woo’s emphasis on an integrated, more user-friendly platform suggests that merchants may look for hosting solutions that complement these improvements. Hosting companies that specialize in performance-optimized WooCommerce hosting, security, and scalability will likely see increased demand from businesses seeking reliable, tailored infrastructure for their stores.

Additionally, Woo’s branding evolution reinforces its open-source identity, making it clear that businesses using WooCommerce need to think beyond just software—they need hosting solutions that support growth, high traffic, and custom integrations. Unlike SaaS platforms, WooCommerce users retain full control over their data and store operations, making hosting a critical factor in performance and success.

What this means for the future

Woo’s shift isn’t just about a new name; it reflects a larger strategy to remain competitive in the evolving eCommerce industry. As the platform continues to enhance its native features, integrations, and usability, hosting providers will play an essential role in ensuring merchants can leverage these improvements effectively.

However, one major question arises: could this rebrand pave the way for Woo to introduce its own SaaS-based hosting solution? Currently, Woo prominently features hosting providers like Bluehost, Nexcess, SiteGround, and WordPress.com as recommended solutions for WooCommerce. But with this renewed focus on brand recognition, there’s speculation that Woo might launch its own official hosting service—one that could potentially sideline existing providers.

If Woo introduces an exclusive hosting solution, it could have significant implications for companies currently offering WooCommerce Hosting or Woo Hosting. Will these terms become restricted or require licensing? Could we see tighter control over who can market their services as WooCommerce-optimized? If Woo follows the path of other SaaS competitors, hosting providers may need to prepare for shifts in branding rights, partnerships, or even competition from a new dominant player.

For businesses currently using or considering WooCommerce, the rebrand signals Woo’s long-term commitment to improving its ecosystem. However, success with Woo still depends on choosing the right hosting and technical support to maximize its potential. Hosting providers that can adapt to these changes and offer solutions tailored for WooCommerce will continue to be a valuable part of the eCommerce ecosystem, but they may need to rethink their positioning in the face of potential direct competition from Woo itself.

The long-standing WHOIS system for looking up domain name registration details is coming to an end. Starting January 28, 2025, ICANN will officially replace WHOIS with the Registration Data Access Protocol (RDAP). But don’t worry—this change isn’t happening overnight, and most users won’t notice any immediate disruptions.

RDAP is a modern alternative to WHOIS that offers several improvements:

  • better security: it provides more controlled access to domain registration data.
  • international support: unlike WHOIS, RDAP supports multiple languages and character sets.
  • structured data: it delivers information in a standardized format, making it easier to process.
  • more control over data: RDAP allows differentiated access, meaning some users (like law enforcement) may see more details than the general public.

ICANN-accredited registrars and gTLDs have already supported RDAP since 2019, so the transition has been in the works for a while.

What this means

For the average user, the change from WHOIS to RDAP won’t make much difference. You’ll still be able to look up domain registration information through ICANN’s RDAP-based Lookup Service at lookup.icann.org. Many registrars may also continue to provide WHOIS access for some time, even though they are no longer required to do so.

For domain registrars, this transition means adapting their systems to fully support RDAP while ensuring backward compatibility for existing services that still rely on WHOIS. They must also provide secure and structured access to registration data, comply with ICANN’s new protocols, and manage differentiated access levels for various users.

End users, particularly business owners and cybersecurity professionals, may experience minor changes in how they retrieve domain data. Those needing access to non-public domain data (e.g., for cybersecurity, legal, or law enforcement purposes) can use ICANN’s Registration Data Request Service (RDRS) for participating registrars. Otherwise, they must contact the domain’s registrar directly to request any hidden details. While RDAP brings added security and efficiency, users accustomed to WHOIS may need some time to adjust to the new system.

Will WHOIS completely disappear?

Technically, registrars and registries can turn off WHOIS now. However, because many systems still rely on WHOIS data, it is likely that some registrars will continue supporting it for a while. Over time, though, RDAP will fully replace WHOIS.

The transition to RDAP is a positive step toward a more secure and modern way of handling domain registration data. While it may take time for everyone to adjust, the process is being managed carefully to avoid disruption. If you regularly use WHOIS for domain lookups, now is a good time to start getting familiar with RDAP!

Hexonet, a well-known domain reseller platform, is shutting down as part of Team Internet Group’s efforts to streamline its operations. The transition will take place over the next few months, with Hexonet customers being migrated to CentralNic Reseller, another platform within the group.

Why is Hexonet closing?

Team Internet Group (AIM: TIG) is reducing the number of platforms it operates to save costs and prepare for upcoming regulatory changes. The company cites the EU’s NIS2 directive, which requires significant adjustments for European ccTLD registrars, as a major reason for consolidating platforms.

What happens to customers?

  • Resellers will move to CentralNic Reseller and have already started their migration.
  • Retail customers will transition to Moniker for domain management.
  • Domains themselves will continue using Hexonet’s registrar accreditations, but management will happen through new platforms.

Key migration dates

  • March 1, 2025 – New domains should be registered through CentralNic Reseller to ensure compliance with NIS2.
  • March 24, 2025 – Registrations and renewals for .DE, .AT, and .PL domains must happen via CentralNic Reseller.
  • June 2025 – Full migration of customer portfolios; Hexonet systems will be decommissioned.

During the transition, domain management may be temporarily unavailable, but domains and DNS services will continue operating. The migration is designed to be seamless, with no data loss expected.

What’s next?

For domain professionals using Hexonet, this marks a significant shift. While the closure may bring disruptions, Team Internet ensures that the transition to CentralNic Reseller will provide a more robust and compliant platform in the long run.
